Summary:
Clive Rosfield knew his mother never loved him. But nothing could have prepared him for being sent as part of Rosalith’s annual tribute to the Greatwood, intended to be a sacrifice to the god who lived there.

Cidolfus Telamon had no use for a human sacrifice, but he was willing to offer a trade: sanctuary and a place for Clive to grow his skills, in return for thirteen years of service to the Greatwood fighting monsters who would prey on the people of Rosalith.

Neither of them meant to grow attached, but thirteen years was more than enough time to forge bonds, even accidentally.

This presents a problem when he develops feelings--okay, fine, a massive crush--on one of the soldiers.
